Greensboro is centrally located in North Carolina. With a current city population of 279,651, Greensboro is the 3rd largest city in North Carolina. Greensboro is one of the three cities of the Triad area, along with Winston-Salem and High Point. Greensboro is named for General Nathanael Greene, who led American forces in the Revolutionary War's Battle of Guilford Courthouse in 1781. Greensboro is where the first sit-in demonstration of the American Civil Rights Movement took place. Four A&T State University freshmen sat down at a segregated F.W. Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro and asked to be served.

Quality Homes and Neighborhoods
Greensboro offers a variety of neighborhoods with various amenities. There are quality homes from every era which depict the growth from the inner city to the suburbs. There are inner-city historic neighborhoods such as Fisher Park built in the early 1900s with tree lined streets and within walking distance to the vibrant downtown. There are modern developments such as Lake Jeanette, a cluster of small communities developed around scenic lakes. Greensboro is known for its many beautiful parks such as the Bog Gardens and the Arboretum, fishing lakes, and neighborhood walking trails.
Parks
Greensboro hosts many neighborhood parks to help local residents have places to relax, exercise and play. They provide areas of refuse for wildlife, and leisure time for nearby residents. Most of the neighborhood parks are between 1 and 15 acres. Some feature playground equipment, picnic shelters and open play areas. Some have regulation size ball fields with scheduled games.
Trails and Greenways
There are more than 90 miles of trails and greenways available in Greensboro. There are beautiful garden trails where visitors will find seasonal and annual plants, shrubs, trees and flowers. The Bog Garden offers an array of wetland greenery which thrives in wetland ecosystems. It is a great spot for viewing wetland wildlife. The city offers 40 miles mountain biking trails which are preserved in a primitive manner.
Lakes
There are a variety of activities at Greensboro’s reservoirs. The lakes are stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish. You can seasonally rent rowboats, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and sailboats.
Greensboro is Rich in History
Greensboro is named after General Nathanael Greene who was a leading general in the Revolutionary War and caused great damage to the British troops of Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.
Greensboro became a city in 1808; it was later nicknamed Gate City primarily due to the convergence of railroad tracks coming through Greensboro.
Two of the primary industries were textiles and apparel. Cone Mills, Burlington Industries and Blue Bell (which evolved into Wrangler) originated in Greensboro.
Greensboro holds a place in history for civil rights. The first black student, Josephine Boyd, integrated Greensboro High School (now Grimsley) in 1957. Greensboro obtained national attention with the sit-ins at the Woolworth Store by four A&T students in February of 1960. In 1979 the Ku Klux Klan and Communist Worker’s Party engaged in a shootout which resulted in the fatalities of 5 Communist Worker’s Party. The situation is now dubbed the Greensboro Massacre.
Sunset Hills is a wonderful inner city neighborhood. The homes were built in the 1920's and 1930's, and include styles representative of the era such as tudor-style homes, colonial homes, and bungalows. Lovely, quiet setting with a strong sense of neighborhood living, yet very convenient to the excitement of downtownPeople living in Sunset Hills enjoy this neighborhood because of its proximity to the many activities of downtown Greensboro including cultural events, restaurants, and night-life. They also enjoy the architectural style of homes built in the early Greensboro era. Many of the gorgeous homes have benefited from renovations, upgrades and improvements affording homeowners modern kitchens, storage, and living spaces while maintaining the old-home character.
Starmount Forest homes date back to the late 1930’s with various styles and sizes. Starmount Country Club was originally completed in 1930. In the 1950’s, Starmount Forest expanded West of Holden Road. Sternberger Elementary School was built in the 1950’s to serve the expanding area. The Starmount neighborhood is very convenient to the Friendly Shopping Center and the Shoppes at Friendly.
Many of these homes are ranch-style, brick homes.
When the neighborhood was designed, a system of walking pathways were incorporated into the layout to make the neighborhood more walkable.
Alfred Moore Scales developed the prestigious neighborhoods of Irving Park and Sedgefield in the early 1920’s. He envisioned developing a community west of the City of Greensboro with meandering trails, lakes filled with canoes, and quaint stone bridges. Scales built two lakes, Lake Hamilton and Lake Euphemia, and the town of Hamilton Lakes was born in the mid 1920’s, now a prominent Greensboro neighborhood with parks, playground equipment, walking trails, and many scenic views. This setting is a wildlife magnet, and you will routinely see ducks, rabbits, geese, squirrels and chipmunks...not to mention the swans which grace the lakes.
